Reporting on fire damaged structures requires a carefully considered approach, not least to access for inspection, and risk assessment is an essential skill as the hazards presented are myriad. In this case a fire in the roof space had spread to destroy rafters and severely damage purlins and timber trusses, compromising overall stability. Other key hazards were risk due to falling materials, and partial collapse of the remaining structure e.g. chimneys and gable walls. We prepared structural assessments followed by a methodology for safe access and a demolition sequence, inspecting during works and on completion. Our brief has been extended to design of remedial works.
