Unity Street is a major refurbishment of the old Merchant Venturers College, latterly a part of Bristol Polytechnic left behind in the move to University status.
The structure was revolutionary in its day combining masonry and structural steel frames, with combinations of barrel vault, filler joist and early reinforced concrete floors.
Elements of existing fabric were retained, including external elevations although much was removed including floors from roof to ground floor levels, requiring careful sequencing of work and temporary support structures.
Additional levels were integrated into the building by installing a new steel frame with thin mezzanine floors. Duplex and triplex apartments were created along with rooftop penthouse suites with views over College Green.
