Let Us Introduce Ourselves

Our Background

specialising in sustainable construction technologies

E&M West was established in the Spring of 2009.  The practice evolved from the regional office of Ellis and Moore; a London-based practice with a solid reputation dating back to its inception in 1977. E&M West’s Principal, Dr Jim Allen, was a partner at Ellis and Moore for 20 years, being responsible for a variety of multi-million pound refurbishment and new build projects. The Bath office  has undertaken work for private individuals, commercial businesses, registered social landlords and both general and specialist contractors.

The business specialises in sustainable construction technologies, working closely with organisations such as The Green Register. E&M West’s Principal Dr Jim Allen was responsible for the engineering design of the ground breaking and award winning Great Bow Yard at Langport, Somerset.

Our interest in sustainable construction has led to design partnerships with developers of timber frame buildings and fabricators, and we have helped to develop systems that are evolving towards “whole house” concepts embracing modern methods of construction.

In addition to our commercial work, our structural expertise and knowledge of sustainable drainage systems is helping our partners to secure planning permissions, and in social housing to improve the code ratings of  development programmes.

A client quote regarding the staff at E&M West: “You have always been professional and extremely helpful and good to work with.”

We  recognise that in this rapidly changing design environment traditional boundaries blur and we are committed to communicating and collaborating with our design partners to deliver holistic solutions particularly where sustainable construction is a design priority.

E&M West also offer specialist design services extending into the area of building physics, and in relation to the appraisal of existing structures including more modern timber frame buildings.

Jim Allen PhD BEng MICE RMAPS

founded E&M West in 2009 to pursue his interest in sustainable design practice

Jim founded E&M West in 2009 to pursue his interest in sustainable design practice. He trained professionally with Ove Arup and Partners and Arup Associates and in total he has 40 years’ design and research experience since graduation, including the design of both refurbishment and new build projects and associated infrastructure.

Landmark projects include the Unity Street Development in Bristol, where a combined refurbishment and new build approach utilised masonry, reinforced concrete and steelwork in the conversion of an educational building into flats and commercial premises, and the award-winning sustainable housing development at Langport for Ecos Trust.  Recently completed work, or current on-site work includes: stabilisation of a slope to gain access to an existing house in Bath using concrete piles and retaining walls, conversion of an old warehouse in Kent, design of ground beams over an old culvert on a three-storey house in London, and refurbishment works to existing Victorian long span timber floor structures on two listed school buildings.

He has built on the Practice commitment to sustainable construction, embracing the technologies necessary to design and detail in timber. Jim is a Green Register member (a grouping of construction industry professionals committed to sustainable design practice) and serves on their steering group.  He is a qualified Principal Designer (CDM), and has lectured widely on risk assessment and matters as diverse as asbestos regulation and inspection.

His research experience in lime mortars has been applied to repair and refurbishment projects, particularly of listed buildings, and he has been involved with research collaborating with Bristol University and major industrial partners in the development of hydraulic lime for mainstream construction applications.
